Mental Mondays: How To Embrace Your Shadow Self And Stay Free

veryone has a flaw that we don’t necessarily accept or love. These traits are known as one’s “shadow self.” Although it’s inherent in all of us, many individuals decide to deny its existence. Ironically, failure to accept your shadow self could cause more chaos than you have the appetite for. Therefore, rather than ignore this part of you, take a closer look at it and embrace it.

In your journey of self-discovery and personal growth, understanding and embracing your shadow self is an essential step. This concept was introduced by psychologist Carl Jung, who described the shadow self as the hidden and often suppressed aspects of your personality. What is the shadow self?

Your shadow self is simply the parts of your personality that you may not readily acknowledge or accept. These aspects can include repressed emotions, desires, and traits that you deem undesirable or socially unacceptable. There is a popular saying that describes this part of you as the dark side of the moon — hidden from view but always present. Embracing your shadow self means acknowledging its existence, understanding that it is an integral part of who you are, and not loathing it. But how is this done?

How to embrace your shadow self

The following are some easy steps to follow to embrace your shadow self:

Learn more about yourself: The first step is self-reflection. Take the time to get to know yourself better. Consider your values, beliefs, and past experiences that may have contributed to the formation of your shadow. Self-awareness is the key to uncovering hidden aspects of you.

Address traumas: Have you got unresolved traumas and issues to deal with? These traumas are often at the core of your shadow self. Recognize and address past or childhood baggage as these can be significant contributors to the development of suppressed emotions and behaviors.

Meditate: Meditation can help you connect with your inner self, including the shadow. By calming your mind and delving into your subconscious, you can gradually bring suppressed thoughts and feelings to the surface. Regular meditation practice can help self-discovery and acceptance.

Stay away from triggers: Identify the situations, people, or environments that cause your shadow self to emerge. Although avoiding such situations or people may not always be possible, being aware of these triggers can help you prepare and respond more consciously when they occur. You stay away to stay free.

Engage in shadow journaling: Having a shadow journal can be a powerful tool for understanding and embracing your shadow self. Never judge yourself: Crucially, have it in mind not to judge yourself during this process. Embracing these parts of you doesn’t mean condoning negative behaviors, but rather acknowledging their existence and working towards a positive change. Be compassionate to yourself as you’ll need it throughout this journey.
