he thing about Black women is that we’re always in the habit of outdoing our past, and this includes the beauty department. This leaves us (SR) in a precarious situation—always trapped in a whirlwind of pristine looks, each campaigning for our attention. Last week, as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art gala and other events came to town, the stars responded by serving haute looks that etched a brand new place in our hearts
The Looks
Makeup
It was a maroon affair with Lupita Nyong’o at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art event last week. For the occasion, the A-list actress stunned in a sheer maroon Gucci dress that flaunted her figure. For a dash of coordination, Nyong’o opted for a soft face beat that featured lightly-filled brows, shimmering eyeshadow, and glossy maroon lips. The pristine doll-up added to the highlight of our week, making the star the purveyor of one of the best celeb makeup looks.
Elsewhere in Washington D.C., Taraji P. Henson put the “S” in shine as she glistered in a gold figure-accentuating number for her cotton-club-themed party. Such a dress deserved an ample boost and her makeup artist, Saisha Beecham, opted for a red pout. Add to that her gold-and-black smokey eyes and you see why this look was hard to miss.
Hair
There’s a reason why locks and braids are a favorite of beauty enthusiasts, but if you’ve ever doubted their staying power, look no further than Chloe Bailey last week. The vocal powerhouse made a sporty appearance enlivened with waist-length braids styled in a floral-like crown. She finished the hairdo with sleek edges for good measure.
